Despair and Apathy Dominate in Dearborn, Home of Largest Arab American Community in Michigan

Michigan city of Dearborn residents are expressing despair and anger over the ongoing war in Gaza, questioning the lack of humanity in the face of civilian casualties. Many are contemplating not voting in the upcoming presidential election as a form of protest against the political leadership’s role in enabling the suffering in Gaza.

The mood in Dearborn’s Arab American community has shifted from fervent energy and anger during protests against Israel’s assault on Gaza to resignation and anger towards America’s political leaders. This change is reflected in the declining support for President Joe Biden, who won Michigan in 2020 by a narrow margin.

Biden’s support among Arab Americans has decreased significantly, with less than 20% backing him as compared to nearly 60% in 2020. The lack of support is evident in the rejection of Biden’s campaign overtures to the community, with leaders like Abdullah Hammoud refusing to meet with his campaign team. The sense of being seen only as votes and the normalization of violence against their families in the Middle East has further fueled the community’s anger and disenchantment with the political system.

While some fear the impact of a Trump victory on Arab Americans, others see little distinction between Trump and Biden when it comes to issues affecting the Middle East. The prevailing sentiment among Dearborn residents, particularly in the Arab American community, is one of frustration, anger, and a lack of trust in the political establishment.
