July 19, 2024 Update from Dean of the College of Human Medicine

Aron Sousa, MD, recently provided an update on various developments in the medical field, including the performance of internal medicine service teams, a joint venture between MSU Health Care/Michigan State University Department of Neurology, and Ophthalmology in mid-Michigan, and his role as executive dean in the provost’s office. The internal medicine service teams were lauded for providing high-quality care, despite taking on sicker patients than usual. The joint venture with UM Health-Sparrow aims to pool resources for a combined neurology service, benefiting both faculty and patients. Additionally, Dave Walsworth, MD, was named the 2024 Michigan Family Physician of the Year for his leadership and advocacy in family medicine.

Sousa will host “Lunch with Norm and Aron” on July 23 to discuss current initiatives and answer questions. The conversation will provide insights into the strategic direction of the College of Human Medicine. Sousa expressed gratitude for the efforts of learners, faculty, and staff, highlighting the importance of collaboration in delivering quality healthcare. The partnership between MSU and UM Health-Sparrow is expected to enhance clinical services and the financial stability of the neurology department.

Overall, Sousa’s update reflects a commitment to excellence in healthcare delivery and educational leadership in Michigan. As the community navigates challenges such as floods and crop loss, the dedication of healthcare professionals like Walsworth and the collaborative efforts of institutions like MSU and UM Health-Sparrow continue to benefit patients and communities across the state.
