Blind Paralympian from Michigan shares trials and triumphs with Ann Arbor students

Paralympic athlete John Kusku recently visited High Point School in Ann Arbor, Michigan, to inspire students with disabilities. Kusku, a professional goalball player who is visually impaired, shared his challenges and successes as a disabled athlete. Despite his limited vision, he has represented the United States in international competitions, including the 2016 Summer Paralympics where his team won silver medals. Kusku emphasized the importance of taking initiative and persistence when pursuing sports and other activities as a person with a disability.

During his visit, Kusku interacted with students, showcasing his silver medal and a goalball. He was also joined on stage by two teen members of his current goalball team. Kusku discussed the difficulties visually impaired athletes face in practicing their sport, as the setup process can be time-consuming. However, he emphasized the importance of finding ways to stay active and continue pursuing one’s passion.

The event was part of High Point School’s “extended school year” program, providing additional instruction for students with disabilities during the summer. Kusku’s visit kicked off “Olympic Week,” showcasing the possibilities available to students with disabilities. Parents and school staff appreciated the opportunity for students to learn about Kusku’s career and how they can overcome challenges to achieve their goals. Kusku’s outreach efforts also include speaking engagements at various schools to inspire young people with disabilities to pursue their passions.
