A recent technology outage caused by a software update error from CrowdStrike impacted a wide range of industries including airlines, banks, hospitals, schools, businesses, and emergency services. The incident affected customers running Microsoft Windows, leading to widespread disruptions. Chief Technology Officer Shannon Wilkinson of Tego Cyber in Las Vegas emphasized the importance of having a contingency plan in place to minimize the impact of such disruptions and continue serving customers without access to IT systems.
Some organizations were protected from the software error by not automatically updating their systems, but this approach leaves them vulnerable to cyber criminals exploiting security vulnerabilities. Wilkinson highlighted the dilemma organizations face between instantly updating to protect against potential attacks or testing updates first to ensure they do not cause issues.
CrowdStrike’s CEO, George Kurtz, issued an apology for the widespread outages and clarified that the incident was not a security breach or cyber-attack. The company is a trusted name in cybersecurity, but the error serves as a reminder of the importance of testing updates before implementation to prevent widespread disruptions. As technology continues to advance, organizations must strike a balance between maintaining security and ensuring operational efficiency.
