Michigan football has had a tumultuous two years, filled with both on-field success and off-field scandals. Former head coach Jim Harbaugh recently received a four-year show-cause penalty and a one-year suspension for recruiting violations during the COVID-19 dead period. Harbaugh has since left Michigan to take over as head coach of the NFL’s Los Angeles Chargers, leaving offensive coordinator Sherrone Moore to face potential NCAA punishment. The program has also seen suspensions of other coaches and staff, including co-offensive coordinator Matt Weiss, linebackers coach Chris Partridge, and former quarterback Denard Robinson.
In addition to these suspensions, Michigan faced a sign-stealing scandal orchestrated by low-level staffer Connor Stalions, leading to further investigations and suspensions. Despite these off-field issues, Michigan excelled on the field, winning the national championship in 2023. Harbaugh’s departure to the NFL was followed by numerous assistants also leaving for the Chargers, leading to further changes within the coaching staff.
Most recently, Moore has been implicated in the sign-stealing scandal, with ESPN reporting that he could face a suspension and show-cause penalty. The NCAA’s Notice of Allegations also named other staff members, including Harbaugh, Partridge, Robinson, and Stalions, for violations. Harbaugh was subsequently hit with a one-year suspension and a four-year show-cause sanction for recruiting violations in 2021. Despite the off-field challenges, Michigan’s national championship win in 2023 remains a highlight for the program.
