The storm left thousands of fallen trees, destroyed train tracks, and flooded buildings in its wake.
The Mitchell County building, sheriff’s office, and transportation authority were all affected by the floodwaters, forcing deputies to work out of a decommissioned middle school. Throughout western North Carolina, including Asheville and Black Mountain, homes were destroyed, vehicles submerged, and roads washed away. Many residents, like Diane Douglas, are facing uncertain futures without flood insurance.
The devastation caused by Hurricane Helene has left communities in shock and disbelief. Espino, a worker at Black Mountain Academy, described the scene of a road collapsed into a river as “unbelievable.” Despite the challenges, residents are coming together to support each other and begin the long process of recovery.
