At least 75 people have become ill after eating McDonald’s Quarter Pounders that are linked to a deadly E. coli strain, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The cases have been reported in 13 states, with 22 people hospitalized and two suffering from a severe kidney condition. The outbreak has been linked to slivered onions served on the hamburgers, supplied by California-based Taylor Farms. Several restaurant chains have removed onions from their menus out of caution. McDonald’s has pulled the contaminated products from its restaurants in 12 states. It is unclear how the onions were transported to McDonald’s locations, as Taylor Farms has not responded to requests for comment. Two lawsuits have been filed against McDonald’s by individuals who claim to have fallen ill after eating at the restaurant, with a total of 15 people represented by a food safety law firm. The FDA and CDC continue to investigate the outbreak, as most E. coli infections go unreported as individuals recover without testing.
