Dr. Sue Balmes, a distinguished professor at Lake Michigan College, has been honored with the title of Professor Emeritus in recognition of her 20 years of dedication and excellence in academia. Dr. Balmes’ journey at LMC began as a student before she went on to earn her Ph.D. and conduct cancer research. She returned to LMC and made significant contributions to the biology department, including securing a grant to enhance the biology program.
In addition to her work in academia, Dr. Balmes led international initiatives such as Project 1808, which provided students and faculty with global education opportunities. She was known for her passion for science, commitment to student success, and collaborative spirit. Dr. Balmes served on various committees at LMC and mentored numerous students and colleagues.
Dr. John Beck, Chair of the Natural Sciences, Exercise Science, and Wellness Department at LMC, praised Dr. Balmes for her contributions to science education and her impact on students’ lives. The Board of Trustees’ decision to grant her the title of Professor Emeritus reflects the widespread respect and admiration she has garnered within the college community.
