Ayrault Family Reunion Celebrates Spartan Exhibition Victory against Wayne State

Michigan State women’s basketball started the 2024-25 season with an impressive 101-40 exhibition victory against Wayne State. The game was particularly special as it marked a reunion for the Ayrault family, with Julia Ayrault playing against her sister, Annabel, who is a sophomore guard for Wayne State. Julia led the Spartans with eight points, eight assists, and four blocks.

The Spartans had a strong offensive showing with six players scoring in double figures, led by Theryn Hallock and Grace VanSlooten with 16 points each. VanSlooten, in her first game after transferring from Oregon, also contributed with six rebounds, two assists, two steals, and two blocks. Freshman center Inés Sotelo impressed in her debut with 13 points.

Michigan State dominated the game from the start, scoring 21 unanswered points before Wayne State managed to get on the board. The Spartans shot 73.7% from the field in the first quarter and continued their strong performance throughout the game. Despite a slight comeback attempt by Wayne State in the third quarter, Michigan State maintained its lead.

The Spartans showcased their depth by having all 14 active players contribute to the win. Michigan State will look to carry this momentum into the regular season opener against Oakland. The team’s strong performance was highlighted by their scoring balance, dominance in the paint, and ability to capitalize on turnovers. The victory sets a positive tone for the Spartans as they look ahead to the remainder of the season.
