Taylor Swift’s public endorsement of Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election has sparked a discussion on the influence of celebrities in politics. A recent YouGov survey found that while some Americans may be influenced by celebrity endorsements, the majority believe that celebrities should stay out of political discussions.
The survey showed that only 11% of Americans have reconsidered their political stance based on a celebrity’s opinion, and just 7% have supported a political candidate because of a celebrity endorsement. In fact, 51% of respondents said that a celebrity’s political position actually made them think less of the celebrity.
While Democrats and younger adults are more likely to view celebrity involvement in politics positively, Republicans and older Americans tend to believe it is detrimental to American democracy. Additionally, 32% of Americans think that speaking out on politics generally harms a celebrity’s career, while only 10% believe it helps.
The YouGov poll, conducted among 1,137 U.S. adult citizens, aimed to gauge public sentiment towards celebrities and their influence in politics. The results suggest that while some individuals may be swayed by celebrity endorsements, most Americans prefer that celebrities stay out of political discussions.
