Young man convicted of murdering pregnant woman and four family members during argument over curfew

Raymond Childs III, a 21-year-old Indianapolis man, was found guilty of six counts of murder, including the deaths of his father, stepmother, stepsister, stepbrother, and his brother’s girlfriend, who was pregnant, in a shooting that took place in January 2021. Childs was also convicted of attempted murder and carrying a handgun without a license. The killings reportedly stemmed from an argument over Childs staying out late. He methodically went from room to room shooting the victims, leaving his 15-year-old brother injured but alive after fleeing the house. After a mistrial was declared in his first trial, Childs was convicted following a five-day trial where a jury deliberated for three hours.

Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears expressed the unfathomable nature of the crime and the impact on the victims’ family and friends. He commended the trial team, law enforcement, and witnesses for their dedication to seeking justice despite facing adversity. Childs is facing a sentencing hearing on January 7, with potential prison terms of 40 to 65 years for each murder count, 20 to 40 years for attempted murder, and one to six years for carrying a handgun without a license. Childs’ attorney has not yet provided a public statement on the conviction. The guilty verdict provided some closure and justice for the victims of this tragic crime.
