Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is currently in Spain on a trade mission to attract foreign investments to Michigan. The three-day trip, which began on Nov. 25, aims to showcase the state’s strengths and competitive advantages to international business and policy leaders. Whitmer is joined by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) CEO Quentin Messer Jr. Michigan is Spain’s fifth-largest trade partner among the states, with Spanish companies having invested in eight foreign direct investment projects resulting in over 900 jobs and nearly $284 million in capital investment in Michigan over the last decade.
The governor and her team will meet with public and private sector leaders to expand partnerships and secure investments, with a focus on creating jobs and bringing critical supply chains back to Michigan. Meetings will include discussions with Spanish automotive supplier Gestamp, which has announced expansions in various Michigan locations. MEDC officials hope to showcase Michigan as a prime destination for global investment, with a strategy centered on investing in people, revitalizing places, and winning projects.
This trade mission is part of the state’s efforts to strengthen economic ties with foreign partners, with previous trips to South Korea, Taiwan, the United Kingdom, and the Netherlands involving both Gov. Whitmer and Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist II. Overall, the goal of the mission is to generate new economic opportunities for Michigan and create well-paying jobs for its residents through international investments.
