Michigan continues to search for a replacement for former standout Mike Sainristil at the Nickel position. After struggling to find a suitable replacement in 2024, safety Makari Paige stepped up and made the position his own. As the team prepares for the 2025 season, veteran Ja’Den McBurrows is battling injuries, opening up an opportunity for new arrival Mason Curtis.
Curtis, a 6-foot-5 safety, has been impressing coaches with his versatility and adaptability. Having played linebacker and Edge in the past, safety seems to be his best fit. Curtis has been practicing at both safety and Nickel, drawing comparisons to Michigan legend Ty Law and Baltimore Ravens star Kyle Hamilton.
Despite his size, Curtis believes he has the football IQ and range to excel at Nickel, a position typically occupied by the team’s quickest and fastest receiver. By using his size to jam opponents at the line, Curtis hopes to disrupt their timing and prevent quick releases.
The upcoming Spring Game on April 19 will provide fans with a chance to see Curtis in action as he competes for the Nickel spot. With his combination of size, speed, and versatility, Curtis could be the missing piece Michigan needs to solidify their defense for the upcoming season.
