John James, Republican Congressman, declares candidacy for governor of Michigan

Michigan’s gubernatorial race is heating up as another candidate has entered the fray. Republican Rep. John James, a military veteran and Trump ally, announced his bid to replace Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. In a statement, James emphasized his commitment to faith, family, and his state, expressing his belief that Michigan has been held back by a lack of strong leadership. He criticized the state’s trajectory over the past seven years, citing the loss of manufacturing jobs as evidence of failed policies.

James, who became Michigan’s first Black Republican member of Congress in 2022, would also be the first Black governor of the state if elected. He previously ran for Senate twice unsuccessfully, but remains a strong contender in Michigan politics. His entry into the race has been met with approval from the National Republican Congressional Committee, who see him as an asset in maintaining and growing the Republican majority in Congress.

As the primary race continues to grow, with candidates from both major parties and even an independent vying for the position, James remains a formidable challenger. His alignment with former President Trump and his focus on common-sense policies and prosperity for Michigan make him a candidate to watch in the coming months. With support from both local and national Republicans, James intends to inject new energy and leadership into the state’s government.
