Measles cases in Texas climb towards 500 as outbreak spreads among day care children

Six young children at a day care center in Lubbock, Texas have tested positive for measles, adding to the already out-of-control outbreak in the state. The total number of confirmed cases has risen to 481, with 56 people hospitalized. The outbreak started when a sick girl tested positive in late March, leading to more cases among young children at the day care center, none of whom were fully vaccinated.

The CDC has not provided clear guidance on handling measles in a large day care center like Tiny Tots U Learning Academy, where the outbreak occurred. The U.S. is facing its largest measles outbreak in six years, with cases reported in over a dozen states. The CDC has sent vaccines to Texas, but has not held a news briefing about the outbreak.

Public health officials are concerned about the potential for more outbreaks in child care centers as cases continue to spread. Child care facilities are being urged to encourage families to get vaccinated and unvaccinated children are being asked to stay home for at least 21 days. The CDC recommends two doses of the MMR vaccine for lifetime protection against measles.

The situation at the day care center in Lubbock highlights the need for vigilance in preventing further spread of the disease. With funding cuts forcing some areas to cancel vaccine clinics, community efforts to prevent outbreaks are crucial.
