Trump is granted permission by Supreme Court to end teacher training grants

The Supreme Court allowed the Trump administration to terminate Education Department grants for teacher training that were deemed to violate their new policy against diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts. The decision, with a 5-4 majority, stated that the district court judge did not have the authority to order the funds be paid under the Administrative Procedure Act. The dissenting opinion argued against this conclusion, stating that the grant recipients would suffer harm if the funds were withheld. The grants awarded under two different programs were found to promote DEI initiatives that discriminate based on protected characteristics. A lawsuit filed by eight states and entities receiving the grants argued that the decision to rescind the awards violated federal law. The 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals declined to block the ruling, noting lack of specific information regarding why programs were considered in violation. The case involved grants issued to entities in the suing states, totaling about $600 million canceled in teacher training grants. Trump had also signed an executive order seeking to dismantle the Education Department, but complete elimination would require congressional approval. Previous emergency applications filed by the administration were not granted by the Supreme Court. This marks the first win for the administration at the Supreme Court in Trump’s second term.
