Enhancing CPR Awareness Through Cardiac Arrest Preparedness at Michigan

University of Michigan Students Take Action to Prevent Sudden Cardiac Arrest

Sudden cardiac arrest is a serious issue affecting over 436,000 Americans annually, but only 65% of the population are trained in CPR. This lack of preparedness was highlighted in August 2024 when University of Michigan Engineering freshman Ethan King collapsed during a run with the University of Michigan Running Club. Despite being surrounded by 30 other runners, no one knew how to perform proper CPR.

In response to this incident, Public Health senior Hannah Stovall and Engineering junior Nolan Tribu co-founded Cardiac Arrest Preparation at Michigan (CAP) in collaboration with the Michigan Emergency Medical Services Club. Their mission is to increase CPR knowledge and education on campus. Since October 2024, CAP has trained over 150 athletes and plans to expand into other student groups.

By sharing King’s story during trainings, CAP aims to emphasize the urgency of being prepared for sudden cardiac arrest. The personal nature of King’s experience has made the trainings more meaningful for students, encouraging them to take action and become CPR certified.

CAP has successfully organized trainings for club sports teams, with plans to reach students across campus. Tribu stressed that even a few minutes of CPR training can make a difference in an emergency. The success of CAP showcases the power of student-led initiatives in creating positive change on campus.

King hopes that by spreading awareness and encouraging students to take initiative, lives can be saved in the event of sudden cardiac arrest. He emphasizes the importance of taking action, even if not perfect, to make a difference in an emergency.
