Republican Rep. John James vying for Michigan governor nomination

U.S. Representative John James (R-MI 10) announced that he will not seek reelection to Congress in 2026, opting instead to run for Michigan governor. In a social media post, James emphasized the need to bring Michigan back to common sense and highlighted his support for President Trump. The Democratic Governors Association criticized James for his partisan politics and warned against bringing the chaos of Washington, D.C. to Michigan.

The decision by James, the only Black member of Michigan’s congressional delegation, opens up the swing 10th Congressional District to potential Democratic competition in the upcoming election. Other Republican candidates vying for the GOP nomination include Aric Nesbitt, Anthony Hudson, Mike Cox, and Tudor Dixon.

On the Democratic side, Lieutenant Governor Garlin Gilchrist, Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, and Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan are among the contenders seeking the party’s nomination. Governor Gretchen Whitmer is unable to run for reelection due to term limits.

The race for Michigan governor is shaping up to be highly competitive, with candidates from both parties and independents entering the fray. James’ decision to shift his focus from Congress to the governorship sets the stage for a contentious and closely watched election in November.
