A federal appeals court has paused a lower court’s ruling ordering the government to rehire around 24,000 probationary workers. The 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals stated that the government is likely to succeed in showing that the district court lacked jurisdiction over the claims made by the workers. The decision effectively ends the injunction directing the workers to get their jobs back. The ruling came after a federal judge in Maryland sided with a coalition of states, accusing the government of not following proper procedures for firing a large number of employees without warning. The Supreme Court also issued a similar ruling involving around 16,000 workers that the Trump administration sought to terminate. The government claimed that each worker was dismissed for performance or individualized reasons, but the judge found that they were all collectively fired without proper notice. The appeals court decision will remain in effect until the government’s full appeal is decided.
