This weekend, a section of I-94 in Detroit will be closed to allow for the removal of the McClellan Avenue overpass. The closure will affect all lanes in both directions between I-75 and Gratiot Avenue (M-3) starting at 8 p.m. on Friday, April 11. Drivers will be detoured using Gratiot and I-75 until around 5 a.m. on Monday, April 14, when the highway is set to reopen.
The overpass, which was built in 1957, was closed last year due to poor structure conditions. Its removal is part of future upgrades to the I-94/Gratiot Avenue interchange, which will eliminate the need for the overpass. Prior to the closure of I-94 on Friday evening, all westbound entrance ramps from Cadieux Road to Gratiot Avenue and eastbound ramps between West Grand Boulevard to Van Dyke Avenue (M-53) will also be closed for the weekend. These ramps are expected to reopen by 5 a.m. on Monday, pending weather conditions.
For more information on this closure and other upcoming construction projects, drivers can consult MDOT’s online construction map. It is advised that drivers plan their routes accordingly and allow for extra travel time during the closure of I-94 this weekend.
