State Representative John James vies for Republican nomination for Michigan governor’s race

U.S. Rep. John James announced that he will not seek reelection to Congress in 2026, instead choosing to run for Michigan governor. The two-term House member made the announcement on social media, emphasizing the need to bring Michigan back to common sense. James highlighted his support for President Trump and stated that their alliance would continue. The Democratic Governors Association criticized James for his partisan politics and accused him of trying to bring chaos from Washington D.C. to Michigan.

James’ decision not to seek reelection in the 10th Congressional District, which includes southern Macomb County and parts of Oakland County, has given Democrats hope of flipping the district in the upcoming election. James is currently the only Black member of Michigan’s congressional delegation and has previously run for a U.S. Senate seat, narrowly losing in 2020 before winning a House seat.

Several other candidates have announced their intentions to run for governor, including State Senate Republican Leader Aric Nesbitt, former U.S. House candidate Anthony Hudson, former Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox, and 2022 GOP gubernatorial nominee Tudor Dixon. Governor Gretchen Whitmer, a Democrat, is unable to run again due to term limits.

On the Democratic side, Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist, Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, and Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan are among those seeking the nomination in the August primary. The race for Michigan governor is shaping up to be competitive with a diverse group of candidates vying for the position.
