Americans are shocked by how often they feel compelled to help the environment

A recent survey of 2,000 Americans found that the average person experiences 48 days of “eco guilt” per year, feeling like they could be doing more to help the environment. The survey, conducted by Talker Research on behalf of HP, also revealed that other worries such as finances and health concerns add to the stress Americans feel, making them more likely to engage in less environmentally-friendly actions.

Despite these challenges, the study showed that nearly three in four Americans wish they were more environmentally friendly and are actively looking for ways to reduce their eco guilt. Some of the environmentally-friendly habits that people find difficult to maintain include proper recycling, cooking at home instead of ordering takeout, avoiding single-use plastics, and bringing reusable bags when shopping.

Millennials and Gen Z experience eco guilt more frequently, with younger generations more willing to pay more for eco-friendly products. Consumers are calling for reduced plastic packaging, more affordable sustainable products, better recycling programs, and greater access to reuse and repair services from brands.

HP’s SVP of Subscriber Growth, Kwamina Crankson, emphasized the importance of making sustainable living easier for consumers without adding extra stress. By offering products and solutions that fit into people’s routines and support more sustainable lifestyles, HP is working to ease the burden of eco guilt and make sustainable choices more accessible for everyone.
