Two trails in the northern Lower Peninsula, the Betsie Valley Trail and the Chain of Lakes Water Trail, have been designated as Pure Michigan Trails for 2025. The announcement was made during the Pure Michigan Governor’s Conference on Tourism, with the trails highlighted for offering exceptional hiking, biking, and paddling experiences while connecting residents and visitors to local communities and businesses.
The Pure Michigan Trail and Trail Town Designation Program, a partnership between the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Pure Michigan, aims to boost the state’s reputation as the “Trails State.” The program recognizes high-quality trail experiences that promote healthy lifestyles, conserve natural resources, and support economic activity in local communities.
The Betsie Valley Trail, a 22-mile rails-to-trails pathway, showcases the former Ann Arbor Railroad route and passes through various natural areas and attractions. The Chain of Lakes Water Trail, a collection of 12 interconnected lakes in northwest Michigan, provides over 100 miles of paddling opportunities for all skill levels.
Both trails have strong community support and contribute to the quality of life for residents and visitors. The Pure Michigan Trail designation recognizes the efforts of organizations and individuals dedicated to maintaining these exceptional trails. Recipients receive recognition through signs, branding, and inclusion in Pure Michigan trail maps and marketing materials.
