John James, Republican congressman, declares candidacy for Michigan governor

Republican Rep. John James of Michigan has announced his candidacy for governor in what is expected to be a pivotal election in 2026. In a social media post, James criticized Democratic governance in the state and called for a return to common sense leadership. He indicated that he would run as a strong ally of former President Donald Trump, who narrowly won Michigan in past elections.

James, an Army veteran and businessman, previously served in the House after winning a competitive race in 2022. If successful, he would be Michigan’s first Black governor. Other prominent politicians in the state, including state Senate Minority Leader Aric Nesbitt, former Attorney General Mike Cox, and former gubernatorial nominee Tudor Dixon, are also considering bids for governor.

On the Democratic side, Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist, Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, and Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson are running for governor. Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan is running as an independent candidate, which adds an interesting dynamic to the race.

The winner of the Republican and Democratic primaries will face off in what is anticipated to be a highly contested election. James’ decision to run for governor opens up a competitive House seat in the southeastern part of the state. The race is expected to draw national attention as Michigan plays a critical role in future elections.
