Colorado man found guilty of murdering his wife by impersonating her ex-boyfriend and obsessively following her

Daniel Krug, a Colorado man, was convicted of killing his wife after posing as her ex-boyfriend and stalking her. He was found guilty of first-degree murder, two counts of stalking, and one count of criminal impersonation. Krug, who faces a mandatory sentence of life without parole, was immediately handcuffed after the verdict was read. Prosecutors argued that Krug scared his wife with threatening texts and emails before plotting to kill her after realizing he could face criminal charges.

Kristil Krug, a biochemical engineer, kept track of the threatening messages she received before being knocked unconscious and stabbed in the heart by Daniel Krug. The defense argued that there was no physical evidence linking him to the killing, highlighting the lack of blood in his car or clothes. They also criticized the police investigation, alleging that detective work had failed to protect Kristil before her death and mishandled the case afterward.

Prosecutors presented evidence linking Krug to the crime, such as the creation of the email account used to send threatening messages from his workplace network and the purchase of a burner phone registered to him. Surveillance cameras at the home were found to be tampered with, and DNA from an unknown source was discovered on the tape covering one of the cameras.

Despite initially blaming his wife’s ex-boyfriend for the killing, Krug later suggested she may have been having affairs. Prosecutors argued that his actions and planning before and after the murder showed a deliberate attempt to avoid detection and pin the blame on others. Krug is scheduled to be sentenced on Friday.
