Governor Whitmer Declares Dark Sky Week in Michigan from April 21-28 | Local News, Sports, Employment opportunities

Governor Gretchen Whitmer has declared April 21 through April 28 as Dark Sky Week in Michigan this year. The event, organized by the International Dark-Sky Association, aims to raise awareness about light pollution and promote stargazing. Robyn Porteen, president of DarkSky Michigan, emphasized the importance of preserving Michigan’s night sky by turning off unnecessary outdoor lights and visiting dark sky parks and preserves.

While some state-managed trails and parks remain closed due to ice storm damage, Negwegon State Park is open for stargazing. Eric Ostrander, unit supervisor of the park, highlighted its dark sky designation and convenient location for residents seeking a closer alternative to secluded spots in the Upper Peninsula. Ostrander encouraged visitors to arrive before dark to set up and enjoy the starry night sky.

Dark Sky Week activities include virtual events and speaker sessions to educate the public on light pollution’s impact on wildlife and human health. Whitmer’s proclamation identified nine dark sky land areas in Michigan, including the internationally recognized Rockport Recreation Area. Even though some parks are closed, enthusiasts can still appreciate the night sky at designated locations like Negwegon State Park.

Overall, Dark Sky Week serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving natural darkness for future generations. With events and activities planned throughout the week, residents of Northeast Michigan have various opportunities to participate in stargazing and learn more about the significance of reducing light pollution.
