Michigan House Bills propose restrictions on DNR conservation officers’ authority | Latest updates on News, Sports, Jobs

Two bills currently in the Michigan House of Representatives aim to limit the power of Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) conservation officers. House Bill 4073, introduced by Rep. Dave Prestin, would require DNR employees to obtain permission from private property owners before entering the property, except in cases of hot pursuit or imminent danger. House Bill 4074, introduced by Rep. Gregory Markkanen, would mandate conservation officers to wear body cameras while on duty.

The bills are meant to ensure that DNR officers follow the same rules and procedures as other law enforcement officers in Michigan. State Rep. Cam Cavitt expressed support for the bills, stating that it is common sense for DNR officers to wear body cameras and obtain warrants before entering private property.

If passed, the bills will need to go through the Michigan Senate before becoming state law. The proposed changes are not expected to have a significant impact on the DNR budget. These developments have sparked discussions and debates within the natural resources and conservation community.
