The No. 3-ranked University of Michigan women’s tennis team is set to wrap up its regular season by hosting Michigan State on April 19 at the Varsity Tennis Center. With a victory, Michigan can clinch its third consecutive outright Big Ten championship. Prior to the match, senior Julia Fliegner will be honored as part of Senior Day presented by the Alumni Association of the University of Michigan.
Michigan has dominated Michigan State in the past, winning 24 straight matches against the Spartans and holding a 59-17 all-time record. The Wolverines look to secure their third straight Big Ten title, which would be their 13th in program history. Head coach Ronni Bernstein is aiming for her 12th championship, ranking third all-time in Big Ten history.
Fliegner, the team’s only senior, will be recognized for her achievements, including reaching the semifinals of the NCAA Singles Championship and earning All-America honors. The Wolverines have been on a winning streak, recently reaching their fourth consecutive 20-win season and securing 40 straight Big Ten regular-season victories.
With several ranked singles players and doubles teams, Michigan boasts a strong lineup heading into the upcoming Big Ten Tournament as the top seed. Coach Bernstein, in her 18th season, has led the team to success and is ranked eighth nationally among active coaches in wins.
As the regular season concludes, the University of Michigan women’s tennis team is primed for a successful postseason run, aiming to add to its impressive program history with another Big Ten title.
