Michigan gymnastics brings home national championship trophy to their home arena

The Michigan men’s gymnastics team, led by Olympians Fred Richard and Paul Juda, won their seventh NCAA championship on Saturday night at Crisler Center. This victory marks the program’s first title since 2014 after finishing as the runners-up in the past two years. Richard claimed the individual all-around title while Juda secured the parallel bars title. The meet, featuring six teams, came down to Juda’s final vault which secured the victory over Oklahoma and Stanford.

Twelve programs competed in the championship, starting with Friday’s qualifiers where Michigan had the best performance to advance to the final. Evgeny Siminiuc took the bronze in the parallel bars while Richard and Carson Eshleman tied for second on the high bar. Richard and Juda, who had previously won a bronze medal at the Olympics, had yet to claim a team national championship before this win.

The Wolverines had previously finished in third place for two consecutive years before their two runner-up finishes at the national championship. Michigan had also secured the Big Ten title earlier in the month under the leadership of conference coach of the year, Yuan Xiao. The team’s victory was a culmination of their hard work and dedication throughout the season, led by the outstanding performances of Richard and Juda.
