EGLE Takes Action on Mundy Megasite – Michigan Capitol Confidential

In a recent development, a project in Michigan that was promised $259 million in subsidies from taxpayers has come under fire for violating state environmental laws. Maple & Hill LLC, the company responsible for preparing over 1,100 acres of land for sale to an undisclosed buyer, has been issued a violation notice by the Michigan Department of Energy, Great Lakes, and Environment (EGLE). The company was found to have violated environmental laws by installing a culvert, filling in a stream, and cutting vegetation without the required permits.

Locals, such as Don Ludwig, a neighbor of the megasite who was involved in a controversial eminent domain case in the past, are concerned about the impact of the project on water quality and neighboring communities. Concerns have been raised about the lack of transparency regarding the project, including the amount of water the megasite plans to use daily and the potential job creation.

The Flint & Genesee Economic Alliance, which is overseeing the project, has stated that they are committed to protecting the environment and following all policies and procedures. However, residents like Erin Mooney are questioning the use of taxpayer money for a project that may not have a guaranteed buyer or benefits for the local community.

The project has until 2028 to complete the land preparation in order to receive the subsidies, but concerns about environmental violations and the lack of transparency continue to raise questions among residents and stakeholders.
