Michigan Breaks Record for Tree City USA Certified Communities

Three more Michigan communities, Iron Mountain, Flushing, and Grand Beach, have been certified as “Tree City USA” by the Arbor Day Foundation. This brings the total number of certified communities in Michigan to 131, along with seven healthcare campuses and 10 college campuses. Additionally, 16 communities received Growth Award recognition for their efforts in caring for and celebrating trees.

To earn the designation of Tree City USA, a community must meet certain standards set by the Arbor Day Foundation, including maintaining a tree board or department, having a community tree ordinance, spending at least $2 per capita on urban forestry, and holding an annual Arbor Day observance and proclamation. Lawrence Law, MDNR urban forester and partnership coordinator, praised the efforts of the communities in their tree work.

The 131 communities recognized this year set a new record for the state of Michigan. The Arbor Day Foundation and Michigan Department of Natural Resources continue to support and empower tree programs throughout the state. Lawrence Law expressed gratitude and congratulations to all awardees as they prepare to celebrate 50 years of Tree City USA.
