Former Michigan co-offensive coordinator Matt Weiss is facing over 20 federal charges for allegedly hacking into the accounts of thousands of college athletes and students across the country to access their personal, intimate digital photographs and videos while employed by the school. Weiss was fired in January 2023 for computer access crimes, and the FBI confirmed an investigation into the allegations in October of that year. The United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Michigan announced that Weiss had been charged with 14 counts of unauthorized access to computers and 10 counts of aggravated identity theft.
Weiss had previously worked for the Baltimore Ravens under head coach John Harbaugh before serving two seasons at Michigan under head coach Jim Harbaugh. According to federal prosecutors, Weiss began illegally accessing accounts during his time with the Ravens and continued the behavior through his tenure at Michigan.
The indictment states that Weiss gained unauthorized access to student-athlete databases of over 100 colleges and universities, downloading personally identifiable information and medical data of more than 150,000 athletes. He then accessed the social media, email, and cloud storage accounts of over 2,000 athletes and more than 1,300 students and alumni, downloading personal, intimate digital content.
Weiss targeted female athletes based on their school affiliation, athletic history, and physical characteristics, keeping notes on their appearances and obtaining password information to access their accounts. He is also accused of repeatedly accessing accounts over months or years to find new photos and videos.
Weiss was placed on leave after being accused of illegal activities at Michigan and was fired after not attending a meeting with school officials regarding the allegations. Michigan Athletic Director Warde Manuel stated that Weiss’ termination was in line with university policy and refused to comment further on the matter.
