Digital Lifestyle Programs Decrease Type 2 Diabetes Risk in Individuals with Prediabetes

A recent study has found that individuals with prediabetes who follow a digital lifestyle program are 46% less likely to develop type 2 diabetes over the next 10 years compared to those not on a digital program. Type 2 diabetes is associated with various health conditions such as neuropathy, ASCVD, retinopathy, and kidney disease. In the US, more than 33% of middle-aged and older adults have prediabetes.

The trial included 133,764 adults, with 36.2% having prediabetes and 7.5% having type 2 diabetes. Participants received blood tests before and after the trial, with some choosing to follow a digital dietitian-guided lifestyle program focused on dietary and behavioral changes. Those with prediabetes in the intervention group were significantly less likely to develop type 2 diabetes over the next 10 years compared to those who made no lifestyle changes.

Participants in the digital intervention group also saw improvements in triglycerides and LDL cholesterol levels. The study also reported that individuals with type 2 diabetes who followed a digital lifestyle program were more likely to achieve remission. The authors emphasized the importance of early identification of metabolic deterioration and suggested that fully digital interventions may have more modest impacts compared to blended or face-to-face approaches.

The findings highlight the potential benefits of digital lifestyle programs in preventing the development of type 2 diabetes in individuals with prediabetes. The study was published in the journal Nutrients.
