The iconic Saugatuck mermaid has come to an end as Mermaid Waterfront Bar & Grill and Baldy’s Smoked Meats have been sold to local investors and will be replaced by a new waterfront dining spot called Marker 14. The new owners, Boat Shed Properties, LLC, plan to restore the property with nostalgia and industrial character, including full glass doors that open up to the waterfront. The goal is to open Marker 14 in time for the 2025 tourism season. The property was acquired for $2.4 million in December 2024, with plans for a second restaurant concept at the location. The building has a rich history, previously serving as a warehouse, blacksmith shop, boat livery, fruit store, and motion theater. The Mermaid restaurant, with all outdoor seating, was only open during the summer months and offered a variety of seafood dishes. The deal was closed by real estate investor Stephen Phelps, Phil Sauve of Phil’s Bar & Grille, and real estate broker Chad Van Horn. Further details on the project are not yet available.
