Central Michigan University Golf Programs Move Closer to New On-Campus Facility

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich.—Central Michigan University (CMU) is set to enhance its golf programs with the approval of a new 40-acre, year-round golf facility on campus. The CMU Board of Trustees recently greenlit funding for the project’s design and pre-construction services, contingent on final fundraising results.

"This facility will significantly enhance the student-athlete experience and recruitment efforts," said Amy Folan, CMU’s Zyzelewski Family Vice President/Director of Athletics. The state-of-the-art center will be situated west of Theunissen Stadium, featuring both indoor and outdoor practice areas. Indoor amenities will include putting and short-range practice spaces, golf simulators, and fitness facilities. In warmer months, the outdoor setup will encompass a driving range and short-game practice regions, along with multiple reversible holes.

Coaches from both the men’s and women’s programs expressed enthusiasm for the facility’s potential. Women’s golf coach Ryan Williams noted that accessible practice spaces would increase training opportunities and strengthen campus engagement. Kevin Jennings, men’s golf coach, emphasized the facility’s ability to elevate CMU’s golf programs and enhance the skill levels of its student-athletes.

Fundraising is ongoing for the projected $11 million facility, with over half of the funds already secured, including a landmark $5 million gift—CMU’s largest one-time donation from individual donors. Chris Walker, Deputy Director of Athletics, highlighted the continued support from alumni and donors as essential for turning this vision into reality.

Both golf programs have experienced a resurgence after being briefly discontinued: the women’s team returned in 2014 and the men’s team in 2022, following closures in the 1980s. Currently, they practice at the Mount Pleasant Country Club, which has served as a valuable partner for many years.
