Michigan Wolverines’ Season Takes a Predictable Downturn
No. 24 Michigan’s season took a disappointing turn as they fell 21-7 to No. 22 Illinois on Saturday, marking their third loss of the season and lowering their record to 4-3. The defending national champions showcased an alarming inability to pass, turning the ball over three times and forcing their defense to consistently cover short fields.
Despite Illinois managing just 267 total yards, the Illini capitalized on Michigan’s mistakes. Their longest scoring drive was a mere 55 yards, highlighted by a crucial fake punt that caught Michigan’s defense off guard. After a field goal to start the game, Illinois extended their lead with a 32-yard field goal following a fumble by Michigan quarterback Jack Tuttle, who was making his first start of the season. The Illini’s second touchdown came from Luke Altmyer, who rushed for a 1-yard score in the third quarter.
Although Michigan briefly narrowed the lead with a touchdown before halftime, it was their only notable offensive performance of the day. A 65-yard drive in the second half ended in a blocked field goal, and an interception concluded their final attempt after a 12-play, 69-yard march.
The Wolverines’ offense struggled to generate big plays, producing only one pass over 20 yards—the exception being a 29-yard catch by tight end Colston Loveland. Tuttle, who finished with 208 yards and two turnovers, underscored the team’s ongoing struggles in the passing game, with Michigan quarterbacks having surpassed 200 yards only twice this season.
With challenging matchups against No. 2 Oregon, No. 16 Indiana, and No. 4 Ohio State looming, Michigan may be fortunate to finish the season with eight wins. The path ahead looks increasingly daunting for the erstwhile champions.
