University of Michigan Tennis Duo Earn All-Big Ten Honors Ahead of Tournament
ROSEMONT, Ill. – Seniors Gavin Young and Will Cooksey from the University of Michigan men’s tennis team have been recognized with second-team All-Big Ten honors, as announced by the conference on April 24.
This marks Young’s fourth all-conference accolade. A standout player, he garnered second-team honors in both 2022 and 2023 and earned first-team recognition last season. Young, the 2024 NCAA national runner-up in doubles, has also achieved his second All-America designation this fall. The senior recorded an impressive 16-4 doubles record this year, triumphing 6-1 against ranked opponents, including a victory over the No. 2-ranked duo from Georgia. In singles play, Young amassed a 12-7 record, with half his wins coming against ranked players, despite facing limited action this spring due to injuries.
Cooksey has secured his first All-Big Ten recognition, leading the Wolverines with 21 singles victories as they head into the Big Ten Tournament. Holding a 21-9 singles mark, he shone with a 13-6 record in dual matches and a 7-3 performance against conference rivals. Cooksey matched a career-high six-match win streak and achieved two victories over top-25 opponents, climbing to No. 60 in the ITA rankings.
Additionally, sophomore Alex Cairo was awarded Michigan’s Big Ten Sportsmanship Award, finishing with a 10-12 singles record and 14-12 in doubles play.
The Wolverines, seeded No. 7 in the Big Ten Tournament, will face Northwestern today, April 23, at 2 p.m. in Columbus, Ohio. The team aims to build on the strong performances from Young and Cooksey as they look to advance in the tournament.
