NIU Baseball Triumphs Over Western Michigan, Prepares for Milwaukee Matchup
DeKalb, Ill. – The Northern Illinois University (NIU) baseball team claimed a 4-2 victory against the Western Michigan Broncos at Ralph McKinzie Field on Sunday, powered by solid pitching from freshman Carter Cox and sophomore Danny Cihocki.
Head Coach Ryan Copeland praised Cox’s resilience despite his struggles, noting, "He wasn’t sharp, and walked six, but we always know he’s going to find a way to get outs." Cox managed to strike out six batters in five innings, allowing one run on four hits, helping him earn his first career win.
The Huskies jumped ahead early, with a run in the first inning after Charlie Parcell reached base on an error. JP Gauthier then brought Parcell home with a single, putting NIU up 1-0. Later in the inning, Gavin Baldwin contributed a two-out single to increase the lead to 2-0.
Despite Western Michigan getting on the board in the second inning with an RBI single from Chris Akers, NIU responded in the third. After a single from Will Couchman and a subsequent double from Baldwin, Cooper Cohn’s single brought Baldwin across home plate, extending the lead to 4-1.
Cihocki took over pitching in the sixth, delivering four solid innings with two strikeouts and no earned runs, ultimately securing his fourth save of the season. While the Broncos managed to score a run in the ninth, Cihocki remained composed, sealing the win for NIU.
The Huskies will face the Milwaukee Panthers on Tuesday, April 29, at 11 AM, looking to build on their winning momentum.
