Grand Traverse Mental Health Crisis Center soft opens to community
Traverse City, MI – Munson Healthcare officials proudly announce the soft opening of the Grand Traverse Mental Health Crisis and Access Center on January 5, a vital addition to northern Michigan’s mental health services. After years of planning and funding from the American Rescue Plan Act and the Michigan Health & Hospital Association, the facility aims to enhance community crisis care.
This new center, a collaboration between Munson Healthcare and Northern Lakes Community Mental Health Authority, addresses a previous gap in the region’s mental health crisis resources. “Best practices require a crisis hotline, a facility, and a mobile unit,” explained Terri Lacroix-Kelty, Munson’s executive director of behavioral health. Now, Traverse City adds a dedicated crisis center to its existing resources, allowing for early intervention in mental health crises.
Located on the Munson Medical Center campus, the 22,000-square-foot facility currently operates Sundays through Thursdays from 8 AM to 8 PM, with plans to expand to 24/7 service by July. “This soft opening allows us to introduce the center to the community and for staff to adjust before full operation,” stated Munson COO Laura Glenn. The center will soon offer psychiatric urgent care for all ages alongside its current crisis services.
In the initial phase, services include behavioral health assessments and crisis screening—critical in diverting individuals from emergency departments, which have been overwhelmed with mental health cases. Initial statistics show 155 patient contacts within three months, demonstrating growing community awareness.
Future expansions include a nine-bed adult crisis facility and a six-bed pediatric unit, set to provide more comprehensive mental health care. These additions will help alleviate pressure on emergency services, enhancing the overall health care landscape in Traverse City.
