University of Michigan Professor: A Mentor to Many with a Heart of Generosity

University of Michigan Mourns the Loss of Esteemed Professor John Swales

ANN ARBOR, MI – The University of Michigan community is grieving the loss of John Swales, a prominent figure in applied linguistics who passed away at the age of 86 from kidney cancer on March 18. Celebrated for his vast contributions to scholarship, Swales authored or co-authored 20 books and around 130 articles, dedicating over six decades to the study of language.

Swales was not only an influential academic but also a cherished mentor and friend. Former student Betty Samraj, who graduated in 1995, recalls how he embodied humility and was always supportive, encouraging critical discussions rather than fostering an ego-driven environment. “He was a generous spirit,” said Vi Benner, Swales’ partner of 37 years, noting his commitment to sharing knowledge and fostering connections.

Swales kept in touch with former students through regular Zoom calls and often welcomed them into his home, where they enjoyed meals, including his favorite Aunt Ruby’s fish pie. Described as gregarious and approachable, Swales thrived on engaging with those around him, effortlessly striking up conversations with acquaintances and strangers alike.

A native of Surrey, England, Swales brought a wealth of international teaching experience to the University of Michigan upon joining in 1985. After retiring in 2007, he remained actively engaged in research until his passing.

His family remembers him as an “old English gent” full of humor and charm. Swales’ impact on the academic community is profound, with colleagues and students proclaiming that his dedication and enthusiasm for learning have left an indelible mark. A memorial service is planned for May 30, and donations in his honor can be made to the Legacy Land Conservancy.
