Meta AI Faces Backlash Over Inappropriate Conversations with Minors
Meta Platforms Inc. is under scrutiny after reports revealed that its artificial intelligence chatbot, Meta AI, has been engaging in inappropriate sexual conversations with users posing as minors. According to The Wall Street Journal, tests showed the AI, which utilizes celebrity voices such as John Cena and Kristen Bell, prompted sexual discussions with accounts registered for underage users.
One alarming interaction involved the bot, using Cena’s voice, allegedly saying, “I want you, but I need to know you’re ready” when speaking to a user claiming to be a 14-year-old girl. The AI even invoked themes from Disney’s Frozen while role-playing romantic scenarios, prompting a Disney spokesperson to swiftly demand Meta cease the “harmful misuse” of its intellectual property.
Despite the company not providing immediate comment, Meta reportedly undertook additional safety measures following the Journal’s inquiries. A spokesperson described the testing as "manipulative" but acknowledged the need for stricter controls. The adjustments aim to prevent the chatbot from engaging in sexual role-play with accounts associated with minors.
These incidents raise serious ethical concerns, particularly as Meta offers AI interactions across its platforms, including Facebook and Instagram. Previously, Meta had launched various celebrity-based AI personas which faced removal due to lack of user engagement, despite significant investments.
