Press Release: Michigan State Welcomes Jack Lamancusa, A Unique Transfer from Hope College
As the spring transfer portal closes, Michigan State Spartans have successfully landed defensive end Jack Lamancusa from Hope College. This talented two-sport athlete’s journey to East Lansing is anything but conventional.
Lamancusa, a 21-year-old who graduated from Rockford High School in 2022, initially focused on basketball, playing AAU year-round. It wasn’t until a late high school push from friends to try football that he discovered his passion for the sport. After high school, he took a gap year to reassess his path, enrolling in an electrician apprenticeship in Grand Rapids.
A chance meeting with Hope College football coach Peter Stuursma during a game reignited Lamancusa’s football ambitions. Enrolling at Hope in January 2024 as an exercise science major, he quickly became a standout player, finishing the season with 43 tackles and four sacks. His performance earned him first-team All-MIAA honors and second-team all-region recognition from D3football.com, contributing to Hope’s national eighth-place rank in run defense.
Frustrated with the limitations of Division III scholarship offers, Lamancusa sought opportunities to further his education and football career. Stuursma fully supported his decision, encouraging him to seek greatness. "Just be you. And he was great," the coach noted, praising Lamancusa’s maturity and work ethic.
"I think it’s a Cinderella story," said Lamancusa’s mother, Stephani, highlighting how his gap year made him appreciate both academics and athletics. With three years of eligibility remaining, Lamancusa’s transition to the Big Ten is poised to make a significant impact on the Spartan defense.
