Michigan Supreme Court Visits Lowell High School: A Lesson in Justice
Lowell—In an extraordinary event that brought the judicial system to life for high school students, Michigan’s six Supreme Court justices held oral arguments at Lowell High School last week. This unique initiative, part of the Court Community Connections program, emphasizes community engagement and aims to educate students about the state’s judicial system.
Hundreds of students and educators from Lowell, Cedar Springs, Sparta, and Forest Hills filled the auditorium as the justices, seated at a makeshift bench, heard the case of People of MI v. Curtis Allen Morris. The focus was on the application of offense variable 19 during sentencing, which has significant implications for the defendant.
Justice Elizabeth Welch noted, "We love to have the kids see what we are doing in real life. The best part is talking to them afterwards." Chief Judge Deborah McNabb stressed the importance of the event, stating, “These are actual oral arguments… that will have a real impact on real lives.”
Following the proceedings, students engaged with attorneys and justices, asking insightful questions about legal principles and case precedents. Senior Braelyn Spivey expressed her enthusiasm, saying, “I thought it was really cool that we could ask questions of the attorneys.”
Preparation for this event included a previous visit from court officials to discuss the case details and key constitutional questions. Lowell High School’s AP Government teacher, Landon Graham, highlighted the connection between classroom lessons and real-world implications. “This was a great opportunity for kids to see that what we talk about in class is real,” he stated.
For students like Ava Halfmann and Hannah Fickinger, witnessing the judicial process firsthand solidified their understanding and interest in the law. The event brilliantly illustrated the essence of real-life learning, leaving a lasting impact on the young audience.
