Michigan Launches Operation Ghost Rider to Tackle Distracted Driving
MID-MICHIGAN (WJRT) – Over the weekend, Michigan law enforcement agencies initiated a statewide crackdown on distracted driving known as Operation Ghost Rider. Led by the National Transportation Safety Organization (NTSO) and funded by the Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning, the initiative aims to enhance road safety across the state.
"Every time a driver chooses to look at their phone or engage in any distraction, they’re putting lives at risk," stated Jim Santilli, CEO of the NTSO. The operation deploys unmarked police vehicles equipped with officers trained to spot distracted drivers, who will alert marked units to execute traffic stops. Participating in this effort are both the Michigan State Police and numerous local police departments.
Distracted driving remains a critical concern, with driver inattention cited as the leading factor in most traffic crashes. According to data from the NTSO, Michigan recorded 15,136 distracted driving incidents in 2023, leading to 59 fatalities and nearly 6,000 injuries. First Lt. Mike Shaw of the Michigan State Police emphasized the urgency of addressing this issue.
In response to the growing threat of distracted driving, Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed a law in 2023 prohibiting the manual use of cell phones while driving. Violators face penalties, including fines, community service, and driving courses for repeat offenses. The law allows only hands-free mobile device usage behind the wheel.
Operation Ghost Rider represents a proactive approach to reducing the dangers of distracted driving and promoting safer road conditions for all Michigan residents. As law enforcement ramps up its efforts, drivers are reminded to stay focused and prioritize safety to help save lives.
