Scholar-Athlete Spotlight: Carla Russell’s Journey at Michigan

By Shira Black

In a weekly series highlighting exceptional Michigan student-athletes, MGoBlue.com features Carla Russell, a standout rower and aspiring movement scientist from Henley-On-Thames, England. Attracted to the University of Michigan for its prestigious academics and vibrant school spirit, Russell’s experience has surpassed her expectations.

Initially uncertain about American university life, Russell embraced the diverse academic offerings at Michigan, moving from a focus on political science and history to discovering her passion for applied exercise science. "The opportunity to explore various subjects allowed me to determine my career path," she reflects.

Russell’s interest in movement science led her to perfect her communication skills, essential for her future aspirations in healthcare. A pivotal moment came during an elective course where she taught movement to underserved elementary school children affected by COVID-19 disruptions. "Seeing the children’s growth was impactful," she shared, emphasizing the importance of body literacy in fostering lifelong health.

Learning from renowned professors like Laura Richardson, Russell gained insights into chronic conditions and realized her unique blend of athletic experience and academic knowledge positioned her well for a career focused on chronic disease management.

Her rowing journey has been equally enriching. With the season running from August to June, Russell stresses the importance of recovery and intentionality in practice. After a remarkable performance at last year’s Big Ten Championships, where Michigan boats dominated, Russell cherishes the growth of her teammates—especially novices competing at high levels for the first time.

Ultimately, Russell’s experience at Michigan embodies a spirit of teamwork and collective success, transcending individual achievements. "It’s fulfilling to contribute to something bigger than myself," she states, reinforcing her commitment to empower others and enhance the legacy of Michigan rowing.
