Valparaiso Baseball Prepares for Midweek Matchup Against Western Michigan
The Valparaiso University baseball team (8-30, 3-15 MVC) faces Western Michigan (12-27, 8-13 MAC) on Tuesday, April 29, at 2 p.m. CT, as they wrap up a four-game road stretch. The Beacons are set to engage in a home-and-home series with the Broncos over the next two Tuesdays.
The Beacons are coming off a difficult series against Belmont, where they struggled against dominant pitching. Joe Ruzicka and Zane Brown combined for a no-hitter and a one-hit performance, respectively, leading to two crushing 1-0 losses for Valpo, capped by a 10-0 defeat in the opener due to multiple errors. Harry Deliyannis showcased strong pitching in a close loss, while Spencer Boynton delivered five scoreless innings, but the bullpen faltered in both 1-0 defeats.
Head coach Brian Schmack, in his 12th season, recently celebrated milestone victories and continues to guide the team through a challenging season. Valpo holds a historical 16-34 record against Western Michigan, including a memorable 15-inning marathon last season, which ended in an 8-6 loss for the Beacons.
Set to pitch for Valpo is freshman Nick Baffa, who has shown promise in his outings this season. In contrast, the Broncos are coming off a series win against Northern Illinois and look to solidify their standing in a competitive MAC.
