Hiking Safety Tips for Hot Weather

Stay Safe While Hiking as Temperatures Rise

As summer heats up, hiking enthusiasts are urged to prioritize safety when exploring the great outdoors. ABC-7 spoke with Ranger Lydia Pagel from Franklin Mountains State Park, who provided crucial tips for hikers.

To avoid the intense midday heat, Ranger Pagel recommends starting hikes early. Early departures allow for a timely return, minimizing exposure to the sun. Before venturing out, checking the weather app is essential.

Staying hydrated is paramount; Pagel advises hikers to carry at least two liters of water per hour, or one liter on cooler days. She also highlights the signs of dehydration, urging hikers to recognize early symptoms such as thirst, sweating, and increased body heat. "When you start showing signs of heat stroke, like hot, dry skin or confusion, it’s crucial to seek help," she warns.

Ranger Pagel stresses the importance of staying on marked trails. This practice not only ensures safety but also aids rescue teams if assistance is needed. Hikers are encouraged to team up or join guided hikes to mitigate risks associated with injury.

For pet owners, hydration is equally critical. "We rescue dogs all the time; they need water too," Pagel notes, stressing the dangers of hiking with pets during the heat. She cautions that hot ground can severely injure a dog’s paws.

Finally, Pagel insists that children under 15 should not hike alone in the park, reinforcing that this is an official regulation aimed at ensuring their safety.

As hiking season kicks into high gear, following these guidelines will help ensure a safe and enjoyable outdoor experience.
