University of North Alabama Makes History with NCAA Tournament Berth

INDIANAPOLIS, April 28, 2025 – The 2025 NCAA Division I men’s tennis championship qualifiers were unveiled during a selection show on NCAA.com, and history was made as the University of North Alabama (UNA) earned its first-ever automatic bid to the tournament. The Lions will face Michigan State in the first round on Friday, May 2, at 10 a.m. in Starkville, Mississippi.

UNA’s match against the Spartans marks a significant milestone for the program, which has enjoyed an impressive season with a 19-3 overall record—the most single-season wins since 1988. The Lions dominated conference play, finishing 8-0 and clinching their first conference championship since 1981.

The Lions secured their NCAA berth by triumphing over No. 5 North Florida and No. 2 Stetson in the ASUN Championship, a historic win as it represents UNA’s first ASUN postseason championship in any sport since transitioning to NCAA Division I in 2018.

Following the selection announcement, UNA hosted a spirited watch party at Mugshots Grill and Bar in Downtown Florence, where student-athletes, coaches, and community members united to celebrate this monumental achievement.

UNA now prepares for its first-round clash, with the winner advancing to face either No. 12 seed Mississippi State or New Orleans in the second round on Saturday, May 3, at 1 p.m. Mississippi State will serve as one of the 16 regional site hosts for the tournament’s initial rounds.

The tournament continues with super regional matches scheduled from May 9-11, culminating in the final rounds held from May 16-18 at Hurd Tennis Center in Waco, Texas. Further details about streaming, live stats, and tickets are anticipated in the upcoming days. For the tournament bracket, visit the NCAA website.
