YSU Women’s Tennis Team Wins Horizon League Championship, Prepares for NCAA Tournament
YOUNGSTOWN, OH — The Youngstown State University (YSU) women’s tennis team clinched the Horizon League championship on Sunday, defeating Cleveland State University (CSU) 4-1 at the University of Michigan’s Varsity Tennis Center, marking its third title in four years.
This victory not only avenged an earlier 4-3 loss to CSU but also solidified YSU’s dominance in the league, with head coach Mickael Sopel leading the team to eight titles in twelve years. With confidence high after a convincing 4-0 semifinal win over Milwaukee, the Penguins were determined to triumph against the Vikings. "Everyone was fighting; it was just a different level," said senior Lili Minich.
Despite CSU taking the doubles point, YSU dominated in singles. Seniors Ghada Dirninger and Julia Marko quickly won their matches, followed by junior Yoana Dudova and sophomore Lorena Cedeno clinching the championship with decisive wins. “All the work from the past year pays off,” shared Marko, reflecting on the team’s dedication.
As the team gears up for the NCAA tournament, they return to the Varsity Tennis Center with fond memories, having participated in six successful matches there. YSU faces the No. 3 seed Michigan at 1 p.m. on Friday, a fitting matchup as they look to capitalize on their positive history at the venue.
Marko expressed the significance of this championship in her final year, stating, “It being our last year makes it even more special.” Sopel acknowledged the impact of Minich and Marko, emphasizing their leadership and contribution to the program.
With a strong legacy and the support of their community, the Penguins are poised and ready for their upcoming challenge against Michigan in the NCAA tournament.
