Several factors illustrate how a sedentary lifestyle fosters MASLD. Reduced physical activity diminishes energy expenditure, promoting fat storage in the liver, notably linked to obesity and abdominal fat. The Mayo Clinic points to insulin resistance as a significant contributor; inactivity exacerbates this condition, leading to excessive fat accumulation.

Additionally, chronic low-grade inflammation linked to obesity can facilitate the progression from simple fatty liver to NASH. The pro-inflammatory cytokines released by accumulated visceral fat worsen liver inflammation.

To combat this, Dr. Dasyam shares essential lifestyle tips for individuals at risk of MASLD:

  1. Regular Exercise: Engage in at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity weekly.
  2. Reduce Sitting Time: Break long periods of inactivity with short walks or standing breaks.
  3. Healthy Diet: Emphasize fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins while minimizing unhealthy fats and sugars.
  4. Gradual Weight Loss: Aim for a sustainable 1-2 pounds of weight loss weekly, targeting a 5-10% reduction for liver health improvement.
  5. Manage Health Conditions: Effectively address conditions such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol.

By understanding the links between a sedentary lifestyle and liver health, individuals can take proactive steps to mitigate the risks of MASLD. Regular consultations with healthcare professionals are crucial for personalized guidance and monitoring.
